RBL Zomato Credit Cards – Detailed Review

RBL Zomato Edition Credit Cards

RBL Bank and Zomato has launched Edition co-branded credit cards in partnership with Mastercard. These co-branded credit cards are targeted towards regular Zomato users and promise a reward rate of 5%-10% on Zomato orders. Not to forget the complimentary Zomato Gold membership on these credit cards. Here is everything one needs to know about these Edition credit cards.

Below is brief comparison of the RBL Zomato credit cards:

Rewards and Benefit

  • Joining Benefit:
    • 500 Edition Cash on joining, equivalent to INR500.
  • Recurring Benefit:
    • Complimentary Zomato Gold City membership, which is renewed every year. Gold offers valid only in the city of residence. Not sure if this works on KYC address basis or on the card delivery address.
    • 2000 Edition cash on spending INR200,000 per year
  • Reward Points:
    • 1 Edition Cash on every INR100 spent. 1 Edition Cash = INR1. Thus the reward rate of 1%.
    • Accelerated Reward Points:
      • 5 Edition Cash on every 100 spent on dining or all purchases made via Zomato app. Reward rate of 5%
      • 5 Edition Cash on every 100 spent online. Reward rate of 1.5%

Verdict

This is a decent entry-level credit card targeted towards regular Zomato customers. The overall earn rate of 3.7% on the sample spends for an entry-level card is excellent. However, if one were not to consider Zomato spends; earn rate falls to 1.9%, which is still decent for an entry-level card.

Though the card has the annual recurring benefit of 2000 Edition Cash on spending INR200,000, no annual fee waiver above certain spends is somewhat a dampener. Another downer with this card is redemption option is limited to payment via Zomato app. However, for the other variant, statement credit is also an option.

  • Recurring Benefit:

    • Buy 1 Get 1 movie ticket on BMS every month.
  • Reward Points:

    • Accelerated Reward Points:
      • 10 Edition Cash on every 100 spent on dining or all purchases made via Zomato app. Reward rate of 10%
      • 5 Edition Cash on every 100 spent online. Reward rate of 1.5%
    • Lounge Access:
      • 8 domestic lounge access per year (Max 2 per quarter)
      • 2 international lounge access per year

Verdict

RBL Zomato Edition credit card appears very mediocre for the annual fees of INR3000. The overall reward rate of 3.8% is good. However, if one takes away the Zomato spends, the reward rate falls to just 2.4%. Which for annual fees of 3,000 is just about okay. RBL Bank could have given better rewards for annual spends of 500,000 instead of just 2000 Edition Cash.

Reward rate based on sample spends

Sample Spends charts

On a sample spends comparison, there’s hardly anything to choose between Zomato credit cards. Both nearly give the same rewards of ~4%. Key assumptions in my calculations are:

  • One spends INR200,000 on the Classion Edtion credit card while on the Edition credit card one spends INR500,000 annually.
  • Spends on Zomato are assumed at INR200/day everyday. For rest, they are split equally between online and offline.
  • Value of Zomato Gold membership, for city membership -800/year taken from app. While for Zomato Gold Global membership, assumed at INR1200/year, same as Zomato’s India membership.

Thoughts on Zomato Gold Membership

No doubt, Zomato Gold is an excellent program. Further, since they give 1 on 1 free on delivery too, it is a must-have membership for everyone. However, one can get Zomato Gold membership at deep discounts from various avenues, such as 50% off on using ICICI Bank credit cards or free from Diners Privilege credit card and Diners Black credit card.  Thus, just because RBL and Zomato are giving Gold membership free it is not an enticing offer enough to enrol for these cards.

Further, I checked with the Zomato customer care, they have no option to enrol for a Global Gold membership as of now. Therefore, this Zomato Gold global membership is something unique for the Edition credit cardholders. However, the benefits of this membership are very user-centric, depending on how often one travels abroad. Here too, for someone who travels abroad frequently, he would need a super-premium credit card or one that gives a lot of frequent flyer miles.

Conclusion

The USP of the RBL Zomato Edition credit cards is Zomato Gold membership and higher reward points on Zomato spends. However, to be honest, till date I have hardly ever ordered a product from Zomato which gives me less than 20% discount on one or the other credit card or wallet.

The unique use case for using these credit card exclusively is paying for one’s  Zomato Gold orders, where one would get an additional 5% or 10% discount over and above the Zomato Gold discount.
